Indian Diplomat Devyani Khobragade Indicted; Asked to Leave US

The Indian diplomat whose arrest in Manhattan last month sparked an international firestorm was indicted Thursday, the feds said.

Devyani Khobragade, 39, was busted on charges she lied on a US visa application for her Indian housekeeper and then underpaid the woman.

"There will not need to be an arraignment on the indictment scheduled at this time," Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara wrote in a letter to Judge Shira Scheindlin.

Khobragade was “ very recently accorded diplomatic immunity status,” Bharara said.

Earlier on Thursday, Bharara had said Khobragade left the country, but his office later issued a clarification stating that is not the case.

Khobraqade has been asked to leave the country, according to an official, adding she will likely leave soon.

The indictment handed down Thursday adds new details about the case, including allegations that Khobragade and others attempted to "silence and intimidate the victim and her family and lie to Indian authorities and courts."
